A LITTLE HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Playing American football - It's the most popular sport in America and a billion dollar industry. However, do you know how football got started?
Rugby, a British sport, was introduced to America in the 1860s. At the same time, sports clubs started to sprout up all throughout the nation. American football, a rugby variant, began to gain popularity.
The inaugural intercollegiate football game featured Rutgers and Princeton teams on November 6, 1869. The game at the time resembled rugby a lot. Back then, there weren't four passes.
Each squad had 11 players instead of the previous 12 in 1892. Although the game's appearance started to resemble what it does now, it was still violent.
By 1905, there had been 18 fatalities and roughly a hundred possibly injured players.
Following the formation of the American Professional Football Association, the National Football League was created. Because the two teams were vying for players, salaries increased.
They combined in 1966 and decided that the Super Bowl would be a matchup of the league champions. Football has now grown to be the most popular sport in the country, generating a billion-dollar industry and playing a significant role in Thanksgiving and New Year's celebrations. The Super Bowl has become an international sensation and an unofficial holiday.
