Novak Djokovic
Born in Belgrade, Serbia, Yugoslavia (now in Serbia), Novak Djokovic is a Serbian tennis player who is regarded as one of the best men's players in the sport's history. His nine Australian Open victories set a record among his 21 Grand Slam singles victories.
At the age of four, Djokovic began playing tennis and swiftly rose through the junior ranks. Despite the challenges of growing up in the 1990s war-torn Serbia, he eventually rose to the top spot among 14- and under players in Europe before rising to the top spot among 16- and under players before going pro in 2003. At the age of 18, Djokovic rose to the top 100 in the ATP rankings and achieved his first ATP event victory in July 2006. He reached the 2007 U.S. Open finals but lost to Roger Federer in straight sets after making it to the quarterfinals of the French Open and Wimbledon. Djokovic extended his impressive play into 2008, winning his maiden Grand Slam event, the Australian Open, and became the first Serbian to take home one of tennis' four most illustrious singles titles. He won a bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing later that year.
Between February 2008 and the end of 2010, Djokovic won just 10 ATP men's singles matches, and he only made it to one Grand Slam final (the 2010 U.S. Open). As a result, his development stagnated for over three years. His luck changed in December 2010 when he guided Serbia to the nation's first Davis Cup victory. Following his Davis Cup triumphs, he went on a 43-match winning streak, the third-longest in the Open era (since 1968), which includes winning the 2011 Australian Open twice. Djokovic's impressive run came to an end when he lost to Federer in the French Open semifinals, but his impressive performance helped him quickly become the world's top player after he overcame Rafael Nadal to win the 2011 Wimbledon title. Later, Djokovic overcame Nadal in the U.S. Open championship match to win his third Grand Slam championship of the year.
He defeated Nadal once more in 2012 at the Australian Open, triumphing in a five-set match that lasted nearly six hours. At the 2012 French Open, when the two faced off in their fourth straight Grand Slam final, Djokovic fell to Nadal in four sets. Djokovic won his fourth Australian Open championship in 2013 by defeating Andy Murray. The following year, he won another Wimbledon title by defeating Federer in a gripping five-set final. Djokovic became the all-time leader in Australian Open men's singles titles during the Open era in 2015 after defeating Murray to win his fifth career Australian Open. The world's top-ranked Djokovic defeated Federer to capture his third Wimbledon title after falling short in the 2015 French Open final. At the U.S. Open, he maintained his strong form, defeating Federer in the championship match to win his 10th Grand Slam championship overall. When Djokovic defeated Murray in the 2016 Australian Open final in straight sets, he extended his Grand Slam winning run to 21 games. He once again defeated Murray in a Grand Slam final at the 2016 French Open. Djokovic completed a career Grand Slam by winning his first French Open title.
2016 U.S. Open semifinalist Novak Djokovic fell to Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland in four sets. In the first three Grand Slam events of 2017, he was unable to get past the quarterfinals. As a result, he declared in July that he would not play the rest of the year in order to treat an elbow ailment that had been plaguing him for the previous 18 months. He started performing again in January 2018. Djokovic gradually became better throughout the year, and he won his fourth Wimbledon championship in July. He won his third U.S. Open singles title two months later. Djokovic won his seventh Australian Open singles title overall in January 2019, which is the most in the tournament's history. Then, in thrilling fashion, he successfully defended his Wimbledon title, defeating Federer in a match that lasted a remarkable 4-hours-57-minutes and was won by a tiebreaker when the fifth set finished in a 12-12 tie.
Djokovic won his 17th Grand Slam championship in 2020, where he continued to dominate. The COVID-19 epidemic forced the cancellation of Wimbledon that year, while the French Open went on as scheduled. There, he advanced to the finals but fell to Nadal. In 2021, Djokovic won the Australian Open, adding to his collection of victories. He won his second French Open singles title in June of that year. With his second Wimbledon victory in July 2021, Djokovic tied Federer and Nadal for the most Grand Slam men's singles titles ever with 20. This continued his winning streak. He participated in the U.S. Open later that year, to win all four Grand Slam competitions in a single calendar year, becoming the third male player to do it. Despite making it to the finals, Djokovic lost in straight sets to Russian Daniil Medvedev.
By capturing his 21st men's singles Grand Slam championship at the 2022 Australian Open, Djokovic aimed to go down in history. But he got involved in a debate over Australia's requirement that visitors have the COVID-19 vaccine. Djokovic wasn't required to get immunized at first, but the exemption came under fire after a public outcry. Ultimately, his visa was revoked, and Djokovic was deported prior to the start of the competition. Nadal ultimately prevailed in the men's competition to surpass Djokovic and Federer in terms of Grand Slam victories. Later in 2022, Djokovic participated at the French Open, where he was defeated by eventual champion Nadal in the quarterfinals. With his victory at Wimbledon in July, Djokovic ended a dismal campaign and won his 21st Grand Slam title.
